Sweetness

As I have mentioned previously, the baking season is upon us. It is a great time of the year to stock up on baking supplies. They have a long shelf life, as you can see HERE, and are easily stored. This week at my local Meijer and Buschs  grocery stores, Dominos brand sugar is on sale! At Meijer, the 2lb bags of powdered confectioners sugar and brown sugar are 3 for $5. The 5lb bags of granulated sugar are 2 for $6.

After anticipating this sale, by viewing the preview ad at Meijer's Facebook page last week, I acquired several Dominos coupons to save '50 cents off of any sugar over 2lbs' from E-Bay. These coupons will double to $1 of savings when used at all my local stores.

The 2lb bags ended up being 3 for $2, and the 5lb bags ended up being 2 for $4!

I bought three of each, and that should hopefully last me for almost a good 6-9 months.

Overnight crockpot oatmeal ***EDITED WITH RESULTS

I have been wanting to try making oatmeal in my slow-cooker for a while now.  Waking up to a delicious hot oatmeal waiting for me seems like a great way to start the day. After googling 'crockpot oatmeal' tons of different recipes and variations come up. So here is the one that sounds the best to me.....I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow!

1 cup steel cut oats (NOT Quick Oats!)
4 cups water-Reduce to 3 cups if you like your oatmeal on the dry side
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup brown sugar
1  TBS butter
1/2  tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon

Cook on low for 8 hours and top with fruit, milk, honey etc.

This stuff looks like bird food, I hope it tastes good!

10/26/11 Results:
I'd have to say overall this was a good meal. It had a very creamy consistency, which almost reminded me of rice pudding. I guess that's why the recipe says to only use 3 cups of water for a thicker oatmeal. I will definitely make it again! I would probably add fruit to it next time, like cranberries or raisins, to make it a little more "chewable". My 15 month old ate a whole bowl full of it too!

2 for $5

All grocery stores have "2 for $5" sales every week. You never have to actually buy 2 items, but I usually do and here is why: You can use 2 coupons in this scenario. So first of all, the stuff is on sale already at 2 for $5, and then you add TWO coupons. Usually the price can come down to "2 for $3 or less". This is one of the reasons why you should buy two newspapers every week (or 4, or 6....)

Who Nu cookies and Alexia frozen french fries, including their organic and sweet potato fries, are both are on sale, 2 for $5, at Hiller's this week! I have been waiting to use my coupons for these two products, and now have 2 of each one.

Best thing ever.......

This is quite possibly the best store bought frozen treat ever invented. I stumbled upon it today at Hiller's. It even had a twist off lid.... fancy! Check the list HERE to see where you can buy it.

Week of 10/24: Hillers

Grain Berry cereal is good. It is made by the Silver Palate company, and it can be found in the "healthy" section of the cereal aisle. This week at Hiller's it is on sale for $1.99 per box.

This is a good deal, and here is why: Typically inside all boxes of Grain Berry cereal there are lots of coupons, including one to save 50 cents off of any box of their cereal and one to save 50 cents off of any Silver Palate product (which will double to $1 of savings) .

I have two of these coupons from a previous purchase, so I was able to get 2 boxes for only ONE DOLLAR EACH! I then can get the coupons out of those boxes, and buy 2 more boxes for $1 each! So the total for 4 boxes of cereal will be only $4.00!

Also included in the inside of Grain Berry cereal is a form you can fill out and send into the company for one free Grain Berry product. All you have to do is mail them the proof of purchase and bar-codes showing you have purchase 4 Grain Berry products! So there you go, buy 4 get one free!

Tough desicions :-)

This is my second week of going to Jazzercise, and several months of going to  Zumba. Both classes are very dance inspired with loud dance music. Still trying to figure out what I like better. I want to pick one or the other and start going more often to whichever one I decide to go with. Continuing to go to both is ok, but the cost is higher to keep paying the "drop in" fees.

Jazzercise is much more of a 'variety hour', as it includes floor exercises, weights, cardio, and sculpting. Childcare is included in the class fee.I feel like I don't move around the room while in this class. Most of the moves are done in your own personal space on the floor.

Zumba seems to be much more of a two-part only class consisting of lots of cardio and a cool down routine. It is a lot more high-impact than Jazzercise. The whole class spins, twirls, and travels  back and forth across the room.

So similar, but each with its own unique twist. I guess I need a few more weeks to decide which class to go with.

Still trying to figure it all out.

Cupcake recipe

Gather up the following supplies:

2.5 cups Flour

1.34 cups Sugar

3 Eggs

1.25 cups Milk

1 tsp. Salt

2.5 tsp. Baking powder

1.5 tsp. Vanilla

3/4 cup Butter-the real stuff, not margarine

1. Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer, beat the softened butter alone for 30 seconds
2. Gradually add the sugar, while continuously using the mixer to whip things together.
3. Add the eggs, one at a time. Keep mixing. You want things as fluffy as possible.
4. Now you want to alternate adding the milk and flour, a little bit at a time.
5. Add the vanilla, baking powder, and any thing else you want to use for flavoring. Mix well.
6. Line your cupcake pan with paper cups and fill each cup about 1/2 to 2/3 full with the batter.

Bake at 375 for about 12 minutes. The time may vary depending on the size of your cupcake. Cool them down and frost them. Yields 24 cakes.

I added shredded orange peel to my cake batter and created these Zesty Orange cupcakes for a Halloween party we are going to tonight.

For the frosting, I used 1 cup of butter flavored Crisco and 1lb of powdered sugar. Start with just whipping the shortening up by itself, then gradually add the sugar. Use about 2 tbsp. of milk to thin it out a little bit.

I added a little bit of vanilla and almond extract, and red and yellow food coloring.

Enjoy!

One-day sale at Meijer: Saturday Oct. 22

Check it out!  This sale is Saturday only. The best parts I saw were for the "Buy 2 Get 2" pop, and "Buy one get one for a dollar" shoe/boot/slipper sale. I hope this applies to the children's shoe section, because I need to get some winter toddler boots soon!

Good thing I looked at the preview of the weekly ad, or I would have missed this opportunity come Sunday when I looked at the hard copy of the ad.

Donating expired coupons

I really hate when I am cleaning out my coupon binder, and have to take out all the expired coupons. It can be almost painful to throw away the unused coupons, because I see them as actual money (a little dramatic, I know). Here is a solution to this problem: You can donate expired manufactuers coupons to our military members to use on their military bases. Apparently, expired coupons are accepted on bases all over the world.

Check out THIS WEBSITE for information on the "Overseas Coupon Program". Also, another way to donate to military families can be found HERE. I will definitely do this the next time I do a clean-out of my coupon binder.

Meat and produce seem to be the hardest items to find coupons for. These items often go on sale though, so at least there is some opportunity to save money on them. Check out these rare meat and produce coupons available online (Add more ideas in the comment section if you know of any more):

Print off coupon here for $1.00 off Laura's Lean Ground Beef, available at Kroger stores.

Click here to "Like" Sara Lee Deli on Facebook, and get a free coupon for pre-packaged sliced lunch meat. Periodically, Sara Lee also has coupons in the Sunday paper to save $1 sliced deli meat from the deli counter. This is always a good deal when you combine it with a sale! You may have these coupons from 3 weeks ago still.

Dried plums are a big hit at my house. Check out this link  for online printable coupons for dried plums.

Nature Sweet tomatoes coupon available online and in the October 16th Sunday paper.

How to make time for couponing

A lot of people dismiss couponing, stating that they don't have enough time to keep up every week with it. If you have seen TLC's show "Extreme Couponing", then you have seen the people who spend 30+ hours a week devoted to couponing in addition to their regular jobs, and are completely obsessed with it. That is a little much, in my opinion. There are many ways to save time when couponing, so here are a few.....

#1. I try to view the sales ads at my stores the week before the sales start. Here is how I do that for CVS and Meijer: If you go to their Facebook pages, they often offer "sneak peak" of the upcoming week's sales ad. This gives you time to order coupons online from clipping services, and search online databases for coupons. My favorite place to print coupons is HERE!

****THE UPCOMING MEIJER AD, STARTING 10/22 CAN BE SEEN HERE!

#2. Utilizing all the couponing blogs out their that help spot the good deals for your national stores like Target, CVS, Rite Aid etc. My favorite is http://thekrazycouponlady.com/. The limitations in this method, is that a lot of the Michigan based stores like Kroger and Meijer are not usually included on these websites.

#3. Make a coupon binder, using baseball card holder sheets. This may seem time consuming at first, but it makes your actual shopping trips so much easier. I organize mine by section of the store: Baby, dairy, frozen, meat etc.

Spaghetti Pie recipe

This spaghetti pie recipe is from my 'Better Homes and Gardens' cook book, which is one of my favorite cook books to use! All their recipes are so classic and simple. You can read it online HERE!  I doubled everything and made a full pan-sized pie. I omitted the cottage cheese, but only because mine was moldy when I opened it and had to be thrown away.
Yum!

CVS deals: Week of October 16th

CVS has a deal this week, where if you spend $30 on a variety of selected items you earn a $10 gift card of your choice. The gift cards are for restaurants, visa/mastercard gift card, or even a CVS giftcard.  Most of the items selected in this deal are even on sale. The weekly ad can be seen RIGHT HERE.

To maximize my savings I split my purchases into three transactions.

Transaction #1 was the big $30 spending deal, where I earned my free gift card. The great part about this deal is that you just need to have a minimum purchase of $30 dollars BEFORE coupons to get your $10 gift card. So depending on what you buy, you may really only be spending $15 or $20 dollars total after coupons on your transaction. I focused mostly on Pampers diapers, toilet paper, and (delicious) Simply Asia Meals, because I had coupons for those items. I ended up only really paying $25 dollars, and getting a $10 American Express giftcard.

Transaction #2 was a single item transaction. I am a sucker for "As Seen on TV" items and little automatic gadgets. Don't judge me. I decided to get this little gem, which is on sale for $11.99: A Lysol soap dispenser. After taking off $10.00 by using my new gift card, and 75 cents from a coupon from Lysol's official website, my total for this purchase was ONE DOLLAR AND NINTY-SIX CENTS!! This week you can also get $8 dollars in Extra Bucks if you buy one of these. Awesome!

Transaction #3 was was one jumbo pack of Pamper's diapers. They were on sale for $8.99. I used my new $8 Extra Bucks coupon that I earned in transaction #2. My total ended up being ONE DOLLAR AND FIFTY-EIGHT CENTS!! I ran out of Pampers coupons at this point, but these would have been totally free if I had another Pampers coupon. Oh well! Not too shabby for a last minute shopping trip.

To summarize the savings, I spent about $29 and saved over $30 !

Week of October 16: Meijer deals.

When a new product comes out, a high value coupon and a sale follows! I like trying new things, so this is a great opportunity to do that. Sometimes stuff is kind of gross, sometimes it becomes a favorite. Case in point...... Philedelphia Cooking Creme!
HERE is where a "$1.00 off" printable coupon is located for 1 item, and also a 50 cents off *M-Perk is available this week here at Meijer's website. (See explanation below)

The total for one cooking creme will be only FIFTY CENTS each, when you combine these two offers!

My husband and I each have an M-Perks account, so I will be picking up two of these tomorrow when I go shopping.

******Meijer's store coupons are called M-Perks, and you "clip" them online to your virtual account HERE!

The next new product I will be trying this week is Dole Fruit Smoothie Shakers.
They are also on sale at Meijer this week, and if you have been saving your coupons over the last few weeks you should have one to save "$1.00 off of 2 items". Each item should aroun d$1.00 each. Cheers!

Easy toddler meal ideas.....

Sometimes there is just nothing readily available to feed my 14 month old, or pack in her lunch for daycare. Sure, there's always leftovers available, but not always something that is "kid-friendly". Case in point.....today's refrigerator findings at my house include spicy shredded chicken and hot and sour shrimp soup. Neither of which she would be allowed to eat. Gerber has a solution. See that little meal in a cup over there to the left?? So easy to store, heat, and eat.

But at the same time, they are: overpriced, tasteless, and super processed. Here is what I have been doing lately......

I bought a bunch of these little cups:

........and  I pack them full of food and freeze them. I usually just freeze whatever leftovers we have of a dinner that my little lady seems to like. Or, I just make something like spaghetti and portion into several containers all at the same time.

READ THIS ARTICLE FOR TIPS ON FREEZING COOKED FOOD

******A big hit at dinner this week, that is now portioned into tiny cups in my freezer, was this recipe for Mostacholi. Enjoy!

It pays to complain sometimes

I recently have started buying Huggies diapers. Yes, those overpriced name brand diapers with the pretty pictures on them. I have always been a Target Brand diaper lover. And with good reason....they are so cheap, and work great. You can get over 100 of them for $19.99.

I never really looked into buying any of the big name brand diapers until recently, when I noticed that CVS has a lot of sales and store coupons specifically for Huggies. Usually the Jumbo packs are $11.99 per pack, but often are on sale for about $9, "buy one get one for half off", or even clearance priced. The Extracare coupon machine in the store even prints coupons out for Huggies brand diapers! Also, they even have this deal where for every 6 packs of diapers you buy, you get one for free. So I have begun accumulating diapers through couponing left and right. Why not? They wont expire and they will DEFINITELY get used.

When you combine all available money saving resources, a jumbo pack of Huggies can range from FREE to 3.00 a pack!! Just this week I got 2 FREE jumbo packs.

Just today I discovered that at Huggies.com, there is a reward program. Specifically marked packages of their diapers have a code printed on the inside of the package. You can redeem the codes for "points" online. The points can be used in their online Rewards Store to buy things like toys, food, baby clothes etc. Its very easy to sign up and navigate. I even got a free Huggies onsie for singing up.

After singing up in the rewards program I realized that I had 3 new packs of the new Little Mover Slip-On Huggies that I wanted to get the codes out of. After opening all 3 packs, no codes were anywhere to be found :-( I called the manufacturer's phone number that was listed literally on the outside of the package. To make a long story short, within a half hour I had all my missing codes mailed to me. Sometimes it literally "pays" to complain.

P.S. Aren't these cute?! I will definitely try to get a few of these for free this year.

Get your bake on

This week at my metro Detroit area Meijer, Reynold's foil cups are on sale for 99 cents and their pastel paper cups are on sale for 79 cents!! Woo hoo! I now own 6 Reynolds cups and only paid 50 cents for all of them, thanks to coupons from October 2nd's paper. These will definitely be put to go use, as I am a huge fan of making/eating cupcakes!

I have noticed lately that baking related products are starting to be on sale everywhere. This includes stuff like flour, pie crusts, chocolate chips, evaporated milk in cans etc. Coupons and sales tend to follow whatever season it currently is. For example, in the beginning of summer all the BBQ and picnic type food is on sale AND there are coupons available for it. Now, in the fall season, cold weather food, like canned soup, is on sale AND reflected weekly in coupons. I have already purchased a huge stockpile of soup for this winter at super low prices!! Now is the time to stock up for the year on your baking supplies!

New favorite recipe....

Crockpot time! The best time of the year!

This is a recipe for a shredded chicken. You can use the chicken in burritos, on sandwhiches, tacos, nachos, etc.

Mix these ingredients up in your crockpot:
-16oz jar of salsa
-Lime juice (optional)
-Taco seasoning envelope packet
-Chopped onions and cilantro

Add 4 chicken breasts to the mix, and coat them in the sauce. Cover and cook on low for about 6-8 hours. When the chicken is done you can  shred it up with a fork! Yum.

Week of October 9: Covergirl deals at CVS!!

Make-up is fun, especially when you get to try new kinds. Covergirl came out with a coupon in the P&G insert of 10/2/11's paper that was for an unheard of savings of EIGHT DOLLARS off of two face products.

So, yes,  once again this was last week's coupon applied to this week's savings. So what if you don't have last weeks paper? Bummer. Then I guess you miss out on this deal, but start getting the paper every week and you can follow along with the deals I am posting here. Maybe you can scrounge around in someone's recycling bin looking for the paper. Anyways, back to my story here......

At CVS I was able to buy 2 covergirl products and save $8.00. ALSO, I applied a CVS extracare coupon that came out THIS WEEK that saves "$3 off of any covergirl purchase of ten dollars or more".

I was able to get Mascara (org. priced at 6.49) AND eyeliner (org. priced at 6.29) for a grand total of ONE DOLLAR AND SEVENTY EIGHT CENTS!!!

The best part is, since my husband also has a CVS Extracare card, I was able to duplicate this exact transaction because I had another Covergirl coupon and his CVS coupon.

*** FYI.......For those of you who dont know this, CVS has a store loyalty card an "Extracare Card". All you do to get one is fill out a form at the cash register and you instantly get one that is ready to use. Super simple. Its just like the Kroger card at Kroger. Every week CVS has new store coupons that come out for the week, and to recieve them you just scan your CVS card in the coupon printing machine at the front of the store and the coupons print out. The great part is that you can use one CVS coupon and one manufacturer coupon for a single item purchased.

Check out this great in-store deal from Meijer on 2 Liter Bottle Pepsi, Sierra Mist, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, A&W Root Beer or Sunkist in Northville, MI

I like pop. It is easy to store in my basement and does not expire before I get the chance to drink it.However, there never seems to be any good coupon for pop. Until now!

Here is a little scenario about how I bought eleven 2-liters of pepsi products this week at Meijer for super cheap.....It all started with LAST WEEKS paper. There were 2 pop coupons. #1 was "Save 55 cents off of a Pepsi Max 2-liter', and #2 was"Save one dollar off of two 2-liters of any variety of Sierra Mist".

This week at meijer all of the pepsi products were on sale in the store wide "10 items for $10" sale. This sale happens ALL THE TIME at Meijer, and they include different products every time that they do it. The sale is always advertised as "10 for 10 and get the eleventh product free" (So I just think of it as 11 products for 90 cents each). Well here is what I did......

I used 3 coupons to save 55cents off of Pepsi Max and bought 3 2-liters of that. Then I used four coupons of the "1$ off of 2 Seirra Mist" and bought eight 2-liters of that. So that is a total of 11 pops and 11 coupon applications.

the Pepsi Max ended up being 45 cents each and the Sierra Mist ended up being 50 cents each. The 11th pop was Free! I used a coupon toward all eleven item, including the free one. That's totally legit by the way. Then on top of all of that savings I had a Meijer store coupon to save 25 cents off of any 2 pepsi products.

$3.40 for all 11 pops, meaning each one was approx. THIRTY CENTS EACH!!!!

The moral of the story is this....

#1 you have to buy like at least 4 papers each week to really get the extreme savings

#2 You need to save your coupons until the item is on sale

#3 You need to combine manufactures coupons WITH store coupons on items when they are ON SALE!! Triple whammy!

Suave coupon scenario

Let's get this blog started! More about myself later, but for now I want to jump into a coupon scenario. This week the paper was on coupon overload! So many inserts it was like Christmas morning as I was flipping through my paper. I acquired 4 newspapers, and noticed that Suave had 2 separate "buy one get one free" coupons in each paper I bought. One for the Suave Professionals products and one for Suave Kids products (So I got a total of 8 coupons between my 4 papers)

So on to Meijer..... They are having a special this week where all Suave is buy 3 for $5.00 (or $1.67 each). You can mix and match the children's and adults products in this sale.

ALSO, if you spend $10.00 they will automatically deduct $3.00 from your total. Sooooo, the sale really should just say "Buy 6 items for $7.00", right? So here is MY deal....  6 products were bought @ 1.67 each=10.02.

After using my 3 BOGO coupons AND getting $3.00 off for having spent over $10.00 in Suave products my total was $2.01 for SIX Suave products or THIRTY FOUR CENTS EACH!!! Pretty cool, right?
